Aviation/Aerospace
Albuquerque has long been a haven for aviation
and aerospace enthusiasts, researchers, and major
companies. Albuquerque's success in this arena
is tied directly to Kirtland
Air Force Base and the two Air Force research
labs. The Directed
Energy Directorate of the Air Force Research
Laboratory is the Department of Defense's center
of expertise for lasers, high-energy microwaves,
and other directed energy technologies. The Space
Vehicles Directorate's mission is to "develop
and transition high pay-off space technologies
supporting the warfighter while leveraging commercial,
civil and other government capabilities to ensure
America's advantage."
The major private sector companies
in this field include Eclipse
Aviation,
GE Aircraft Engines, Honeywell
Defense Avionics, Sennheiser,
DeVore
Aviation,
Boeing
SVS, and others.
Microelectronics
Albuquerque is home to the largest semiconductor
manufacturing plant in the world - Intel's factory
in Rio Rancho. In addition to Intel,
Albuquerque is home to SUMCO,
Inc. and Xilinx.
Albuquerque continues to improve
its educational resources for training production
technicians, advanced manufacturing, and engineering
students for microelectronics. Albuquerque's Central
New Mexico Community College offers a degree in
Advanced Manufacturing, with a concentration in
semiconductor manufacturing.

Biotechnology/Biomedical
Research and Manufacturing
Albuquerque has long been a recognized leader
in research and development because of the University
of New Mexico, Sandia National Laboratories, and
nearby Los Alamos National Laboratory. Several
small to medium size biotechnology and biomedical
research and manufacturing companies dot the Albuquerque
landscape, and the area is focused on attracting
and assisting other companies in this broad field.
Major companies in the Albuquerque
area within this field include, Cardinal
Health, Ethicon

IT/Software
Building on its strong base of research and academic
resources, Albuquerque is concentrated on becoming
a burgeoning center for software research, design,
and production. Local companies such as Thomson
Elite (formerly ProLaw Software), VanDyke
Software and New
Mexico Software represent a growing cluster
of software companies within the Albuquerque market.
The New
Mexico IT/Software Association provides
an excellent resource for local companies and
those considering the Albuquerque area.
Optics/Photonics
New Mexico has long been a world leader in optical
technologies and the industry is thriving with
new and expanding companies. New
Mexico Optics Industry Association (NMOIA)
is dedicated to bringing together optics-related
businesses, institutions, and professionals to
foster the growth of this very important industry
in New Mexico. Tour this web site and see what
NMOIA can do for you.

Microsystems/Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology and Microsystems technologies involve
researching, understanding, and applying technology
at the molecular level - hundreds and thousands
of times smaller than traditional technologies.
Although these technologies have not yet established
themselves as an "industry", Albuquerque
is certainly a recognized center of research excellence
in this field.
Several of the top researchers in
this field, including the person who coined the
term "MEM's", work for various organizations
in Albuquerque.
- The University of New Mexico has established
an endowed chair of Microsystems at the university
- proving their commitment to the technology.
- Central NM Community College (formerly TVI)
created a curriculum to train technicians in
the field of Microsystems and Micromachining.
- New Mexico was ranked 4th on Top 10 Small
Tech Hot Spots by Smalltimes magazine - October
2006.
